IN the Autumn edition of Brighton’s Uncle Chris mailout there were a number of featured DIY pizzas to encourage healthier eating habits in the community.

Our Luke’s a winner all round

LOCAL cricketer Luke Butterworth has enjoyed a great season with the Weet Bix Sheffield Shield -winning PKF Tasmanian Tigers cricket team.

The talented all-rounder was the leading wicket-taker in the Shield competition this past season, was runner up in the national interstate player of the Sheffield Shield series and named in the four-day team of the year.

Rates kept at CPI low

BRIGHTON rates for 2011-12 will increase by just over $20 for each residential property, in line with the Hobart Consumer Price Index (CPI) rise, but lower than the national rate of inflation.

Annual household rates will rise by $20.80 or 40 cents per week, The 2.9 percent increase is in line with the Hobart CPI increase, but lower than the national CPI rise of 3.3 percent. …more

THE renowned Bagdad Singers  is looking for more female singers to balance its strong male singing component.

The group  was formed more than 16 years ago when the musical director, Chris Fehlberg, was living in Bagdad. While most of the original members lived in the district, other long-standing participants were drawn from the surrounding areas.

Microwise wins contract with NSW water authority

SPECIALISED local government software technology developed by a Brighton Council business has won a contract with a New South Wales water authority to provide a billing and land information system.

Microwise Australia, wholly owned by Brighton Council, won a competitive tender to provide a billing system as well as associated land information management for Rous Water in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. …more

MPs polled on rates system

BRIGHTON Council has sought the views of Lyons MHAs on the recommendations of Access Economics’ report that threatens Brighton’s fair rating system.

The report into Tasmania’s local government rating system was prepared for the Local Government Division of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and its recommendations, if accepted by government, would force the abandonment of Brighton’s current rating system which sees rate rises kept at or below the rate of inflation each year. …more

BRIGHTON Council held its annual volunteers and Australia Day Awards civic ceremony on January 25, with a reception at the Brighton Civic Centre well attended by more than 120 invited guests.

Fair rate system backed - research sends clear message to government

AN overwhelming number of Brighton residents support the Council’s Fair Rating System with satisfaction levels more than double those of ratepayers in the greater Hobart region.

Gagebrook check savours sweet taste of success

AN apprentice chef from Gagebrook has made his culinary mark, winning a bronze medal in the third-year apprentice category of the Australian culinary federation (ACF) competition.

Anthony McCallum was one of only three Tasmanian chefs selected to represent the State in the annual one-day contest, held in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.
